Krum

Khan of the Bulgars (qq.v.) from ca. 802-814, and one of Byzantium's most fearful enemies. His army in 811 won a stunning victory over Nikephoros I (q.v.), who was killed. Krum made a drinking cup from the emperor's (q.v.) skull. In 812 Krum seized Mesembria (q.v.) and set about conquering towns in Thrace and Macedonia (qq.v.). The following year he marched unsuccessfully on Constantinople (q.v.), but he captured Adrianople (q.v.) and carried off its citizens to Bulgaria (q.v.). Fortunately for Byzantium he died the following year, in 814, while preparing another expedition against Constantinople.
